Los Angeles is a sprawling metropolis filled with all sorts of places to go and things to see, and Japan House LA (www.japanhousela.com) is one of those things that caught my eye when I was searching for unique spots to explore. Read on to see what I found at this hidden Hollywood gem!
Nestled within the Ovation Hollywood (www.ovationhollywood.com ) shopping center, the gallery for Japan House LA is easily accessible from any area of the city. If you ride the Metro, there's a stop at Hollywood & Highland so you'll just head out of the station and right into the Ovation. If you decide to drive you'll find plenty of parking in one of the structures located onsite. And since the admission to the gallery is free, you don't have to worry about the price of entry. Here’s some of the amazing Pokémon artwork I spotted!
This Eevee sculpture made from pieces of metal was absolutely iconic. The colors were so vibrant and the posing makes it seems like she’s ready to pounce at any moment.
This Bulbasaur sculpture brought a realness that was unmatched. The texture and color made it seem SO realistic…it seriously looked more like a specimen than a sculpture!
And how unique are these characters?! They were covered in wagara, which are traditional Japanese patterns that symbolize different things in nature. I loved how the artist used a modern vehicle to showcase a traditional pattern.
Japanese clay pots are popular for cooking, but this artist flipped the tradition and made it art! Each pot has a Pokémon positioned so it looks like it’s bursting free of the earthenware pot. Again, blending the traditional with the modern.
The coolest instillation they had was a curtain of cascading Pikachu’s. Each strand featured a Pikachu and swirls. There were hundreds of strands hanging from the ceiling in a winding pattern so you could walk through them, like a Pikachu forest!
The exhibits at Japan House LA are always changing, but they always feature something that ties into Japanese culture, so it’s a place you can visit over and over without it getting repetitive. Now that this spot is on my radar, I can’t wait to see what other things they curate. Maybe next time I’ll check out the restaurant too!
Happy Travels!
