Subtle Ways To Add Stoner Flair To Your Look

While I’m all for being loud and proud with my canna flair, I can also appreciate why some folks may have a harder time letting their lit flag fly. Even with 20+ states having legalized cannabis in some form there’s still a whole heap of stigma around people who consume the plant recreationally. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the lazy stoner/burnout stereotypes, but with all the science and new information coming out, we can combat those tropes with confidence and facts. Part of combating that stigma means being educated but another part that I like to embrace is being a beacon. I can’t count the amount of times I’ve had lowkey compliments on an item of clothing or an accessory from a fellow stoner out in the world. The amount of folks that use this plant not only as way to unwind, but as a way to heal, is astounding…it’s giving “everyone’s doing it” vibes for sure. If you’re new to cannabis or fear the judgement that often comes with cannabis use, you may not feel comfortable wearing a shirt that’s emblazoned with a leaf or other paraphernalia, and that’s okay! However, you may want to embrace the stoner culture but you’re not quite sure how to do it in a way that’s quiet or less obvious and I’m here to help. Keep for reading for some subtle ways to add stoner flair to your look.

Canna Coded

One of the things I think a non toker would have a hard time clocking is cannabis strains. Besides Pineapple Express, not many strains have gone mainstream so they can be a subtle signaling to your fellow stoner. And even if a strain is popular, plenty of them have multiple meanings, like Girl Scout Cookies or Wedding Cake. If you have a favorite strain you could consider representing that on a jacket or bag. Bonus points if it’s a strain that’s less popular because then it makes it even harder to recognize.

Get Technical

Another way to show your love without being overt is by using specific cannabis language or slang. Cannabinoids like CBD and THC are pretty obvious due to their mainstream popularity, but lesser cannabinoids like CBG or CBN aren't as easy to clock. Another set of terms can come from terpenes, they are an integral part of getting you high and they appear in all sorts of plants. You could easily wear a shirt that says "Linalool Lover" or "Myrcene Queen" without arousing too much suspicion because linalool is found in the lavender plant and mangoes are high in myrcene. The more educated you are about cannabis the more niche and technically centered your gear can be.

Get Abstract

Using a distorted or altered image of cannabis or paraphernalia is another option for being able to subtly show your canna pride. I’ve committed to not buying new fabrics for myself anymore, but if you’re looking for cute canna fabric I highly recommend the Spoonflower website. www.spoonflower.com has a huge amount of canna themed fabrics that are designed by graphic designers. You'll find all sorts of prints, but specifically they have a great range or abstract or kaleidoscope style prints of cannabis. The best part is that if you come across a designer that really piques your interest, you can browse their shop and see all of the designs they offer. The fabric options range from loud and proud to quiet and artistic, so no matter what your vibe you’ll probably be able to find at least one design that speaks to you. They also have a variety of fabrics available, so you have the option of getting organic and sustainable fabrics. In addition to fabrics, they carry a variety of home decor items like blankets, pillows or even wallpaper.

Accessorize

Sometimes the best way to add a subtle touch is through accessories. Whether it’s a belt, a bag or some earrings, little touches can make a big impact and show off your creativity. Using a grinder as a belt buckle or necklace can be a sneaky lil surprise in your outfit that only a true stoner would catch. I've also seen some cute necklaces and rings that double as joint holders. Earrings are the best way to keep it small and subtle since they can be easily overlooked. The brand Nancy Chains specializes in jewelry that uses actual cannabis flower in their designs, which include earrings, necklaces, keychains and rolling trays. You can find the website here: www.nancychains.com

Keep It Small

My favorite piece of cannabis themed jewelry is easily my MOM necklace that has a cannabis leaf inside the “O”. It’s small enough that you can’t really make it out unless you’re close enough and paying attention. It could be overlooked in most professional situations but can provide just a little nod to those in the know. You can also shop for tiny stud earrings or small charms for a bracelet or necklace. I also really like the THC/CBD molecule blouse I'm wearing in this pic because unless you recognize the symbol you wouldn’t think much of it. It’s another example of how getting technical can keep your canna gear incognito.

And there you have it, my most subtle ways to add some canna flair to your style without being too obvious. Whether you’re in the boardroom or the school pickup line you can still find ways to show your love for cannabis in a way that feels comfortable to you.

Happy Styling!
